Degree Requirements, MA in Public History (283A)

 

Graduate students in the Public History program choose one of three concentrations:

  • Public History
  • Museum Studies
  • Historic Preservation.

Course Requirements for MA in Public History:

  1. Required Courses

All graduate students in the public history program must take: 

  • HIS 5000: Varieties and Methodologies of History (3 credit hours)
  • HIS 5900: Internship in History (6)
  • HIS 5575: Introduction to Public History (3)
  • 6 semester hours of Readings seminars. 
 
 
A Historic Preservation concentration requires all of the courses in section I, plus: 
  • HIS 5577: Historical Documentation (3)
  • HIS 5578: Architectural History (3)
  • HIS 5586: Introduction to Historic Preservation (3)
  • HIS 5587: Philosophy of Historic Preservation (3)
  • and six hours of electives. 
 
A Museum Studies concentration requires all of the courses in section I, plus: 
  • HIS 5580: Studies in Material Culture (3)
  • HIS 5610: Management in Museums (3)
  • HIS 5640: Interpretation in Museums (3)
  • HIS 5650: Museum Education (3)
  • and six hours of electives. 
 
A Public History concentration requires all of the courses in section I, plus:
  • 18 hours of electives. 

Other Requirements for the MA in Public History:
  • Thesis: Optional
  • Language Proficiency: None required
  • Comprehensive Exams: A written comprehensive examination is required during the final semester of course work.
  • Product of Learning: A written report is required upon the completion of HIS 5900 (Internship).
