SATURN: LORD OF THE RINGS Famous for its striking ring formations, Saturn is perhaps the most beautiful planet in the solar system. Explore the unusual system of moons and rings that surround this stunning celestial body. ALIEN GALAXIES The Milky Way is only one of the over 100 billion galaxies thought to exist, and each of these is composed of as mnay as a trillion stars. Vivid CGI graphics detail the birth of these mysterious galaxies. LIFE AND DEATH OF A STAR The birth of a star is a spectacular event, as gravity brings together massive molecular clouds over millions of years to create these enourmous galactic furnaces. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A STAR compresses the events of billions of years into minutes, using computer imagery to show the lifespan of these massive, heavenly fireballs as they expand, contract, and finally burn out, often in stunning supernova explosions. THE OUTER PLANETS The gargantuan planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune circle the edge of the Solar System. THE OUTER PLANETS shows how these gas giants formed, and journeys to these mysterious orbiting bodies and small planets that lie beyond them, far from the sun.

The Uprising of '34

In 1934, Southern textile workers took the lead in a nationwide strike that saw half a million people walk off their jobs in the largest single-industry strike in the history of the United States. For a time, these new union members, in response to New Deal legislation, stood up for their rights and became a force to be reckoned with in the South. Then management moved in and, with the help of deputized workers and the national guard, crushed the strike. Some mill workers were murdered, thousands more were blacklisted, and many were so intimidated that "union" became a dirty word in Southern communities for decades to come. Barely publicized and rarely acknowledged in history books, the General Textile Strike of 1934 remains a stirring yet amazingly forgotten chapter in Southern history. The Uprising of '34, a film by famed documentarian George Stoney and award-winning independent filmmakers Judith Helfand and Susanne Rostock, examines this hidden legacy of the labor movement in the South and its impact today.

The War That Made America is the four-hour PBS special that vividly brings to life a vastly important but often overlooked period of American history-The French and Indian War (1754-1763). This dramatic documentary, with full-scale battles, elaborate sets and a large cast, tells the fascinating story of three world powers-England, France and an alliance of Native American nations whose struggles planted the seeds for the American Revolution. A central figure is George Washington, then a brash and ambitious young officer in his twenties hoping to make his reputation in the British military, whose blunders actually trigger the war. The series also highlights the critical and sophisticated role of Native Americans in the conflict between the English and the French. Narrated and hosted by Graham Greene, a full-blooded Oneida Indian actor (Academy-Award nominee for Dances with Wolves) whose ancestors fought in this war.

The very young men who flew the B24s over Germany in World War II against terrible odds were an exemplary band of brothers. In "The Wild Blue", Stephen Ambrose recounts their extraordinary brand of heroism, skill, daring, and comradeship. Stephen Ambrose describes how the Army Air Forces recruited, trained, and chose those few who would undertake the most demanding and dangerous jobs in the war. These are the boys-turned pilots, bombardiers, navigators, and gunners of the B24s-who suffered over 50 percent casualties. Ambrose carries us along in the crowded, uncomfortable, and dangerous B24s as their crews fought to the death through thick, black, deadly flak to reach their targets and destroy the German war machine or else went down in flames. Twenty-two-year old George McGovern who was to become a United States senator and a presidential candidate, flew thirty-five combat missions (all the Army would allow) and won the the Distinguished Flying Cross. We meet him and his mates, his co-pilot killed in action, and crews of other planes-many of whom did not come back. As "Band of Brothers and Citizen Soldiers" portrayed the bravery and ultimate victory of the American soldier from Normandy on to Germany. "The Wild Blue" makes clear the contribution these young men of the Army Air Forces stationed in Italy made to the Allied victory.

BIOGRAPHY: GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR: RETURN OF A LEGEND General Douglas MacArthur was one of America's greatest and most complex commanders, a warrior so tough and determined that he helped win World War II with a simple promise: "I shall return." MacArhur was a soldier's soldier: the son of an officer, the star of West Point, and the Army's youngest-ever full general. He was already a retired hero when he was recalled in 1941 to face the biggest challenge-defending an unprepared Pacific force against a seemingly unstoppable Japanese war machine. But everything about MacArthur's life was extraordinary: from his army brat childhood to his rogue war in Korea, the magnificent stand in the Philippines, and a head-to-head confrontation with an angry Harry Truman. Featuring rare footage and interviews with MacArthur's comrades, family, and friends, this compelling BIOGRAPHY program reveals the man who remains a hero to millions.
