Clara Dougherty Brown Memorial Scholarship in History Endowment
The Clara Dougherty Brown Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student. To be eligible you must be a graduate student in the Department of History, a North Carolinian and have an interest in historic preservation or restoration. Students must be enrolled for the full academic year.
Evelyn Shepherd and Brenda Greene History Scholarship
The Evelyn Shepherd and Brenda Greene History Scholarship is open to applicants who are full-time students majoring in history, rising sophomores, juniors or seniors, permanent residents of Ashe, Avery or Watauga counties and should demonstrate satisfactory academic accomplishment (at least a 3.0 GPA). Preference may be given to applicants who can demonstrate financial need. FAFSA is not required. The award is renewable upon re-application and re-selection. Students must be enrolled for the full academic year.
Jonathan D. Billheimer Memorial Scholarship Endowment for History
The Jonathan D. Billheimer Memorial Scholarship Endowment for History was established in memoriam of Mr. Billheimer - a long-time faculty member and supporter of history education - by his family. This scholarship is awarded annually to support a student who is majoring in or intends to major in a course of study in the Department of History, with a GPA of at least 3.25.
Joseph E. Sawyer, Jr. Scholarship for History
The Joseph E. Sawyer Jr. Scholarship for History can be awarded to a student who is a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior who is a declared History major (BA or BS) at Appalachian State, with a 3.0 GPA (cumulative) or higher, and has at least one written recommendation from a member of Appalachian's History faculty - preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need.
Kimberly Gray-Saad Breaking Barriers Scholarship
The Kimberly Gray-Saad Breaking Barriers Scholarship is awarded annually to a first year history student who intends to major or minor in History. This scholarship award recipient is determined by the History Department Chair through discussion with the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
Professor Thomas K. Keefe History Scholarship
The Professor Thomas K. Keefe History Scholarships were established by Carl Jackson and other donors in memory of one of Appalachian's truly outstanding teachers. The scholarship is to assist a full-time undergraduate history major and a graduate student in the pursuit of their studies. To be eligible, you must be a full-time student at Appalachian [defined as at least twelve (12) semester hours for undergraduates and at least nine (9) semester hours for graduates] and be enrolled for the full academic year. Applicants must also be rising juniors or seniors or graduate students with a grade point average of 3.25 or above.
Robert D. Warren Endowment History Scholarship
Applicants for the Robert D. Warren Endowment History Scholarship must be history majors, be rising juniors or seniors and have a minimum (3.0 GPA). Preference in awarding the scholarship will go to applicants who can demonstrate financial need. Students must be enrolled for the full academic year.
The Benjamin Frosst Little Endowed Scholarship for International Travel
The Benjamin Frosst Little Endowed Scholarship for International Travel will provide funding to any History major who plans to enroll in an international study abroad program occurring in the 2024-25 academic year (2nd Summer Session 2024 through First Summer Session 2025). Priority will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. The awarding of this scholarship is contingent on being accepted and participating in an international study program.
The Dr. Donald B. Saunders Memorial Scholarship for History Honors Students
The Dr. Donald B. Saunders Memorial Scholarship for History Honors Students has recently been established to honor Dr. Saunders' extraordinary work in the then University Honors Program, and in the Department of History at Appalachian. To be eligible, the student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who is majoring or minoring in History within the College of Arts and Sciences and is enrolled in the Honors College (freshman and transfer students who declare their major in their first year are not eligible for this award).
Worth Sweet Scholarship for History, Secondary Education
History majors earning a B.S. degree with teacher certification may apply for the Worth Sweet Scholarship if they (1) are rising juniors or seniors, (2) have a GPA of 3.00 or better and (3) can demonstrate a verifiable need for financial support. (A completed Financial Aid Form [FAFSA] must be on file with the Office of Financial Aid.) The award is renewable upon re-application and re-selection. Students must be enrolled for the full academic year.
