GA Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching Assistant

The graduate assistant in this position will generally serve as an assistant to professors teaching freshman and sophomore-level history courses with high enrollments. Primary duties will include attending all classes and taking lecture notes, grading, assisting in the preparation of tests and quizzes, administrative tasks such as printing class paperwork, and (at the instructor’s discretion and with the approval of the TA and Graduate Director) may include some lecturing or small-group discussion leadership. The student will also hold regular office hours in order to meet with students outside of the classroom. Teaching assistants cannot grade more than 70 exams at a time.  Teaching assistants can expect to work twenty hours per week (two of those hours must be in the History Lab). The professor cannot use a graduate assistant in this position as a Research Assistant.

Research Assistant

The graduate assistant in this position will serve as an assistant to professors with specific research needs. Tasks may vary depending upon the project and the professor, but students can expect to work twenty hours per week (two of those hours must be in the History Lab). This research will be completed independently for the most part, with direction from the professor as necessary. When possible, the RA will be matched with professors according to the research field and language. The professor and RA should discuss tasks to ensure assigned tasks are feasible. In the event that they are not or the research involves sensitive material, the RA may request different tasks. Professors and RAs should meet with the Graduate Advisor to resolve any issues involving appropriate research tasks. The professor cannot use a graduate assistant in this position as a Teaching Assistant.
